Cleaning the Nooks and Crannies: Why it's important.

We bought our first home! Needless to say my life has been hectic lately but this experience was a great reminder to me of why it is important to truly clean your home.

Closing Day

It was a very exciting day, the house was beautiful and all I had wanted for the past month was to finally close on the house. On the final walk through though, the rose colored glasses came off. I realized just how much work I had to do ahead of me prior to moving my family into this home.

What I Saw

What did I see that brought me back to reality? I saw an allergy attack waiting to happen (and I almost had an anxiety attack). The seller's had a dog and were not exactly meticulous about cleaning - in fact they did not clean at all prior to closing day. There was dog hair in every nook and cranny of the house - both my husband and I are allergic. I knew that in order to keep our health up I would need to really clean this house.

Also, for kicks and giggles here is a surprise I had in the master bedroom - when the seller's painted they did not pull out the bed to paint behind the headboard!

Another surprise was wallpaper behind the fridge! When the seller's painted, they did not pull out the fridge and remove the wallpaper and paint. No big deal right? Wrong! It can be seen all along the top of the fridge - yuck!

 Places People Never Think About

There are just some places that people never think about cleaning - the nooks and crannies. People always remember to clean their counters and floors but what are they missing on a regular basis?

  • Light Switches - think of how many times a day, and by how many people, light switches are touched. Upon inspecting my new home I noticed that the light switches were encrusted with black dirtiness - and probably a lot of germs!

  • Base Boards - these were so dusty and filled with dog hair in the cracks and space between the wall and board.

  • Ceiling Fans - wipe down the entire blades please, even the tops. Just imagine all the allergens that keep getting  circulated in the air.

  • Tops of doorways, closets and windows - same as base boards, they were caked with dust and dog hair.

  • Vents - I took off the vent covers in preperation to paint and vacuumed out all the dust and dog hair from inside the vents. Then I washed down the vent covers in the sink with hot water and soap.

  • Where the carpet meets the wall - I took the edging tool on the vacuum and really took time cleaning out the crevices and you would not believe the junk caked in there.

  • Under the fridge and stove - I thought I was going to toss my cookies when I was cleaning out the piles and piles of dog hair and dust from underneath the fridge. Not only is this bad because of allergens and germs but it also keeps the fridge from being energy efficient.

Why It Is Important

Okay, the house is dirty but why is this type of nook and cranny cleaning important? Do you know what dust is really made of - if not read the list below, preferably not right after eating:

Breakdown of Common Components in Household Dust

  • Shed human skin cells

  • Flame retardants like polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)

  • Paint particles

  • Cigarette smoke (and its toxic byproducts)

  • Pesticides

  • PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls)

  • PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons)

  • Fabric fibers from your clothes, carpets, upholstery, etc.

  • Sand and soil particles

  • Plant and insect parts (When dust is examined under a microscope, it is not at all unusual to spot ant heads or other insect body parts.)

  • Mold spores

  • Pet dander and feathers

  • Dust mites and their feces

  • Viruses

  • Rodent waste

  • Construction debris (adhesives, sawdust, etc.)

  • Pollen

  • Bacteria

  • Asbestos

  • Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury

Now you understand why it is so important to clean those nooks and crannies because all the things listed above are not good to be breathing in and touching! Keep yourself and your family healthier by getting rid of dust and allergens from your home
